Capt. Chance Smith took the reins of Detachment 1, 548th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group from Maj. Kevin Lukowiak, during a change of command ceremony here Oct. 18, 2019.

Col. Andrew Souza, 548th ISRG commander, presided over the ceremony, and emphasized the importance and accomplishments of the detachment along with welcoming the new commander.

“The team here is small but mighty,” said Souza. “This detachment is a model for the Air Force.”

Souza listed off many accomplishments to include their quick response to Hurricane Matthew and setting the benchmark for multiple intelligence platforms. He spoke of the detachment’s uniqueness, ingenuity and innovation. He said he has the upmost confidence in the future of the detachment.

“While you all are losing a great leader, don’t fret, because Capt. Smith is superb,” Souza said.

Smith joined Detachment 1, 548th ISRG, after serving at the 612th Air Operations Center.

“Words cannot describe how excited I am to be part of this team,” said Smith as he spoke to his new Airmen. “We’ve got the absolute best team right now to be at the cutting edge of change in our intelligence enterprise.”

Smith said he was excited about taking over the detachment, and thanked Lukowiak for all of his hard work during his tenure.

“I’m grateful for all of the knowledge you have passed to me,” Smith said to Lukowiak. “Thank you for leaving this detachment better than when you found it.”

Friends and family looked on as Smith thanked the rest of the crowd, his family, and his new unit for their support and said he is excited for the future of the detachment.

Detachment 1 is responsible for providing timely geospatial intelligence support to 12th Air Force in support of the Air Force’s Distributed Common Ground System.
