85th EIS leads $1.2 million air traffic control tower project

Tinker Air Force Base --  The 85th Engineering Installation Squadron was requested by the 72nd Operations Support Squadron to relocate an existing Air Traffic Control tower equipment into a new tower as part of a large modernization project at Tinker Air Force Base, Okla.
 The $1.2M project, led by Tech Sgt. Alex Moreno and Staff Sgt. Jacob McVay, was accomplished in two phases and took approximately 45 days to complete with a team of 12 personnel from the Radar Airfield Weather Systems work center.
The project consisted of relocating eight air traffic control and landing systems, 31 end equipment devices and all of the associated cabling and grounding.
 Another vital part of the project was the installation of new radios, which offer the latest in voice over internet protocol technology. The radios are used by the air traffic controllers to communicate with flight line personnel and aircraft within the designated airspace.  Tinker Air Force Base is home to the 507th Air Refueling Wing and 552nd Air Control Wing, where depot level aircraft maintenance is performed in support of a $4 billion dollar fleet.
