The deadline for federal income tax filing is quickly approaching for the 2020 tax year.

Originally taxpayers had to file by April 15 but now it has automatically been extended to May 17.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges, the federal income tax filing date extension came at the right time to help many Americans. Additionally, if an individual needs time to file beyond the May 17 deadline a request can be made for an extension until Oct. 15 by filing a Form 4868 through their tax professional, tax software or by using the “File your taxes for free” link on IRS.gov.
